External water tank
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:58:40 PM »
I am new to rv'ing and I just recently purchased an enternal 550 gal fresh water tank for my 5th wheel since it is parked.  Do I need to put chemicals in it and what type?

This isn't really an RV question since an RV is not likely to have a 550 gallon water tank onboard, so I'm not sure you'll find an answer here except by coincidence that an RVer may also know about storing and treating large quantities of drinking water.

I think the best place to get an answer may be your county health department.

I am sorry it is an external fresh water holding tank, and I am assuming that you would put chemicals in it just like you would the one built in(so the water doesn't get stagnant,

Right, I understood it was and external tank.  There are too many unanswered questions to give you a good answer.  For example, how long do you expect the 550 gallons to last you before you need to refill? Is the water coming from an untreated well or is it chlorinated city water? Is the water tank translucent or opaque?

The tank is opague white and the water came from a well, so far in using the well water in jugs it is still ok after a week.  I figure the tank should run about a week with using the shower, dish washing, watering.

The best advice i can offer is to read The way I Sanitize My RV's Fresh Water Tank on my RVBasics.com website.  You'll have to judge for yourself if it's applicable to your situation.
