We're soon embarking on a year long road trip and wanted a versatile way to connect with the internet. Our laptop has wifi, so we can get on at any hotspot, but we also wanted access while driving to get on the spot info about where the next camping is, etc. Verizon told us that the only way we could do it was to pay an additional $60/mo for a modem card that would plug into the usb of the laptop. Too much money, so we opted for the new Droid by Motorola, which is their version of the iphone (and arguably better, even though I'm a Mac guy). The Droid allows internet access anywhere there is a signal, but it's still a small screen to work with. What Verizon didn't tell us was that we could download (for FREE) a small program that allows the Droid to Tether to the laptop. We now have internet access for the laptop anytime we have a cell signal. With 4 bars, I got 600kbs, which is slower than broadband, but faster than our satelite in HI has ever delivered.
